Any sports fan has known the agony of an unjust call (or a call that seems unjust to our home team). With so many viewers tuning in to watch the NFL this month and next it makes sense that football is the newest benefactor of RFID technology

Zebra Technologies has partnered with the NFL to deliver sophisticated player tracking and innovative data gathering services to one of America's most loved sports.

How It Works

Players will wear the RFID tags in their shoulder pads and each tag will broadcast 25 times per second to approximately 20 receivers around the stadium. The Zebra Motionworks server will be able to determine a player's location on the field and his speed at any moment during the game. Sensors are less than 1 inch in diameter and include a battery to last an entire season. The system will be quite accurate with the ability to track each player within a few inches on the field.

Zebra's future plans include applying this technology across other sports. We look forward to watching sports events with less disputes and fairer calls thanks to RFID tech.
